Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. … So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy”.
Reiki is the energy that enlivens us all. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words, Rei, meaning God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power and Ki which is ‘life force energy’. We all have this energy within but we humans, over the centuries, have largely lost the ability to access it. We have become more and more reliant on technology, engineering, science and the material world, depending upon that which we can touch and see and have lost our connection with our deeper and more intuitive skills, our ‘sixth’ sense.
A Reiki Practitioner is not taught how to do Reiki by learning and studying in the normal sense but instead is shown by a Reiki Master/Teacher how to recover the lost skill of accessing Reiki healing energy. This is known as an ‘attunement’. The Reiki student then commits to a way of life guided by the spiritual principles of love, compassion, self love and self healing which, over time and strengthened by a regular practice of meditation and prayer, leads to a desire to help others.
Receiving a Reiki treatment is a wonderfully relaxing experience and a marvelous way to help release stress, bring emotional balance and help ease physical pain. Modern life demands so much from us. We are governed by the clock and spend our day rushing from one commitment to another, worrying whether we are measuring up to someone’s expectations and bombarded by busyness and noise. Magazines, television and films all present us with an airbrushed image of life and it can become difficult, in these circumstances, to remain grounded, realistic, loving and honouring of ourselves, our beautiful humanity and the beauty and humanity of others.
Reiki can help bring us back to who we really are, mind, body and spirit. Relaxing and letting go of daily pressures we can, for a time, become completely peaceful and centered. Reiki has a wonderfully calming effect on the spirit but it will also help clear the mind and energise the body, making it so much easier to go back into the world and face its daily challenges. It can also help manage pain and has been known to ease unpleasant symptoms and help physical healing.
Reiki isn’t a cure-all. It is a way of helping nature do its work and assist the body, mind and emotions to heal themselves but Reiki makes no promises and is not a substitute for medical care. Neither is Reiki a religion. The Reiki spiritual tradition doesn’t require the Practitioner or client to have any beliefs whatsoever and in actual fact Reiki principles are universal and support all wisdom traditions, spiritual paths and religious philosophies. An open mind to spirituality in general is helpful but even that is not necessary. Reiki cannot harm. It is a loving and compassionate energy and will always work for your highest and greatest good.
